Christo Redemptor Retablo (Detail)
Primacolor pencils
22"x 30"
2006

Primacolor pencils on black foam core.
Always fascinated with 19th century Mexican retablos painted on tin, and old crude wooden crucifixes in humble homes. While writing a world war II screenplay in Galveston, Texas I purchased a faded retablo in an open market near the Strand. I used a small portion of that crude painting to add to the mix of this drawing. This is a hat tip to the grand artist, Jose Guadalupe Posada...I've always been a huge fan of his brilliant graphics and woodcuts.
This is a detail of a drawing that spanned several years.
I started it in 1996 when I moved back to Friendswood, and then Austin and Lockhart, Texas and then dragged it around with me to upstate New York, adding small parts in Carabelle, Florida and finally back again to N. California where I kind of sorta finished it in 2006.
