More notes to come: For the record, I have to say that Oliver Jackson was heads and shoulders above nearly all of the professors/artist that I've had the pleasure to know and work with over the years. The man is so incredibly knowledgeable about the practice and history of the visual arts. Verbally he's profoundly nuanced and extraordinarily eloquent.
I've always been a huge fan of the German expressionists; especially George Grosz, for a season I was really into the paintings of Max Beckmann. Oliver suggested that if I ever traveled to St. Louis, that I should make an effort to visit the museum. While working on a Miss Universe pageant television show, back in late 1983, I was fortunate to find the time.
The work elicits many thoughts, words and emotion. Brutish, macabre, striking, sardonic, sexual, sneering, violent, chaotic.....obviously mirroring the tumultuous life and times in Germany and Europe.
The collection is the world's largest holding of paintings and prints of Beckmann, amassed by St. Louis department store executive Morton D. May and bequeathed to the Saint Louis Art Museum in 1983.
